The Good Beer Guide

CAMRA's flagship publication is the Good Beer Guide, which appears each Autumn. A listing in the guide is much sought-after, and is only given to pubs which offer real ale of a consistently good standard. The selection of the pubs to be listed in each area is in the hands of the local CAMRA branch, and beer scoring plays a significant role.

To enable branches to apply consistent criteria across the country, CAMRA operates a National Beer Scoring System. Whilst Herefordshire CAMRA members aim to visit all of the County's 250 real ale pubs during the year, we welcome input from all CAMRA members who visit our pubs. Equally, our members may enter scores for any pub they visit in their travels.

Rate Your Beer by logging on to WhatPub, search for the pub you have visted, click on 'Submit Beer Scores' You will need your ID (membership number)and your password.

Beers are rated on a scale of 0-5, based on the guidelines below. Intermediate "half" scores can be given.

Alternatively, for Herefordshire pubs only, you can send results direct to the branch in spreadsheet format.

Score Rating Description

0 Undrinkable So poor you have to take it back or can't finish it (or no cask ale available).

1 Poor Beer that is anything from barely drinkable to drinkable with considerable resentment.

2 Average Competently kept, drinkable pint but doesn't inspire in any way; not worth moving to another pub, but you drink the beer without really noticing.

3 Good Good beer in good form. You may cancel plans to move to the next pub. You want to stay for another pint and may seek out the beer again.

4 Very good Excellent beer in excellent condition.

5 Excellent Probably the best you are ever likely to find. A seasoned drinker will award this score very rarely.
